Have you ever heard the statement, "God can not lie. He is incapable of lying." I thought, "Of course God won't lie, He's a loving good God." I never really considered the idea of God being actually "incapable" of lying. He's God. He could lie if He actually chose to, right? He can do whatever He wants. I just figured that because God is good, He chooses not to lie. But is that really true? Is it possible that God is truly INCAPIBLE of lying?
Imagine you have the power to create by speaking. What do you suppose would happen if you spoke a lie with this awesome power? Would it still create what you spoke? For instance, let's say you spoke out the words, "Let there be a new star", but you were actually lying and wanted a black hole instead. What would be created? Would exactly what you spoke be created? Or would something other than what you spoke be created? I would imagine if you said, "Let there be a new star." that's EXACTLY what would be created, even if you were lying, because that's exactly what was spoken. There would be NO WAY for you to create anything other than exactly what you spoke, because whatever you speak WILL BE, regardless if you meant something else or not. Are you still with me?
So, let's take this a step further. Whatever that is spoken becomes TRUTH. Why? Because what you spoke is what WILL BE. Which makes it true by default. It would be irrelevant if you meant to create something else. You didn't create something else because you didn't speak something else. You spoke, and it WAS, therefor it's true.
In order for a lie to exist, you need a truth to deceive from. A lie can not exist by itself. Behind every lie, there is a truth that is being covered up. This is the very nature of what a lie is. Now if you are the highest authority in the universe, and everything you speak is what will be, then even if you TRIED to lie, whatever you speak is truth regardless, making lying impossible for you. The only possibility for God to actually lie would be if a being higher than Himself created something, and THEN for God to tell a lie about what was created by the higher being. But if that were possible, the higher being would be god, not the God we know and worship.
With this argument, you would have to conclude that God really is completely and utterly incapable of lying. Why? Again, because whatever God speaks is what will be, making it true by default. God does not speak of things outside of His control. When God speaks, He is the very one creating and controlling it!
"By the word of the LORD were the heavens made; and all the host of them by the breath of his mouth. ... For he spake, and it was done; he commanded, and it stood fast."
- Psalm 33:6, 9 KJV
Some may argue that God doesn't lie because He is good. Logically speaking, when we consider the statements above, this is a logical fallacy. Truth has no respect of persons. Truth simply is what is. For instance, if someone created the cure for cancer, but was a very evil person, would the person's character have any bearing on the cure they created? Not at all. The fact that the person is evil would have no impact on the truth that the cure works. Something else to consider would be this; If God was evil, evil would be the truth. Obviously, it's amazing that we have a forgiving and loving God, but it really has no bearing on the truth which is absolute no matter if it's evil or good in our eyes.
So for myself, when I consider this, I start to think about all the things that God speaks in scripture. For Christians, we believe the Bible is the inerrant, infallible, and inspired words of God. But often times we doubt God's word and the promises He gives us. We wonder if He will really do for us what He says. But when you examine the logic, God is actually incapable of not keeping His word. Remember, God is outside of time, so from His perspective the events He speaks have already happened. They happened the second He spoke them into existence. But from our perspective, living within the confines of this timeline, we are still waiting for God's promises to make themselves a reality for us. However, in the realm of eternity, where God resides, His promises have always already been a reality.
In short, if God is incapable of lying and His promises are already reality, those with faith should be comfortably resting in God's words, knowing He is completely unable to fail them.
"And call upon me in the day of trouble: I will deliver thee, and thou shalt glorify me."
- Psalm 50:15 KJV
"And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose."
- Romans 8:28 KJV
Trust our God. He is the only thing in this universe that you can 100% count on every time without fail. God will never leave you, and He will never lie to you. God IS truth!
"Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me."
- John 14:6 KJV
