God's Laws Of Love

12 Oct

Too many people think God is an "angry God" waving His finger around and telling everyone what we can and can’t do. Most stay away from Christianity because they do not want a demanding, critical god telling them how to live their lives, ruining all the fun. They don’t want to give up their lifestyle of sex before marriage, drunken party nights with friends, pornography, morally questionable media, etc. People want to be their OWN god and do whatever feels good. We actually think we know what is best for ourselves and do not need any help from a bossy god. Yet the real reality is, we have NO IDEA what is good for ourselves! But honestly, whether you believe God is an angry god, or a loving God, He STILL created you and this world you live in. I would imagine God knows what is better for us, don't you? In my book I give a good example:

"If you went to the zoo and the rules stated you should not cross over the fence into the lion’s area, would you say that rule is a hindrance to your experience at the zoo? Would you be offended that the zoo posted these rules? Would you be angry with the zoo if you chose to ignore the rules and ended up a victim of a lion attack? That would be ridiculous, they warned you in their posted rules. Much like when you live your life apart from God and then blame God for the bad things that happen when you sin; God also warned you. Do you think the zoo made this rule thinking, “I can’t wait for someone to break this rule so I can watch them being attacked and then ban them from this zoo!”? I would sincerely hope not. I would hope you are more willing to say the zoo cares about the safety of the visitors. God’s laws are no different."

So, let's get rid of this "angry god" viewpoint. We need to understand that God’s laws were not established because He delights in being a enraged boss that controls our lives. God's laws are in place because He loves us and doesn’t want us to get hurt.

"God's laws are in place because He loves us and doesn’t want us to get hurt."

Let us say you have small children running around the house, and one of the rules of the house is do not stick anything into an electrical outlet. Now obviously as a parent you clearly know why your child, or anyone for that matter, should not do this. You already know what the outcome could be. Your child would probably get seriously injured or possibly even die! No one wants this to happen to their child, so as parents we make rules out of love for their child to keep them safe. Call them the 10 Commandments for Young Children if you will. Do not run in the house, do not wrap things around your neck, do not eat something if it's not food, do not play by stairs, don't jump into the pool without floaties... I could go on and on, and if you're a parent you know EXACTLY what I'm talking about. The child will probably not understand why you have made all these rules and will think you are just being a meanie parent. They may think playing with electrical outlets is fun.

Little side story about myself... When I was about 4 years old my mother left me with a babysitter and he wasn’t watching me properly. I wanted to unplug a lamp from an extension cord so I bit down on the end of it, while it was plugged in, to gain a grip on the end of the extension cord with my teeth to pull the lamp plug out. It seemed like a perfectly good plan to me at the time and I saw no danger at all. Usually that is the way it is with us as well. The plan seems perfectly fine and no immediate danger is recognize by us. But like little children who think all is well, we can put ourselves in danger very quickly. It’s only by the grace of God that I am alive today to be writing this. I was somehow able to pull the cord out of my mouth while blinded by the electrical current going through my face. There had to have been an angel that helped me, there is no other explanation. I had a black charred hole in the side of my face for a long time before it finally was stitched shut and scarred over. You can imagine how freaked out my mother was when she got home.

God knows what the ultimate outcome of lying, stealing, fornication, adultery, idolatry, etc. All these have very high chances of leading you into situations that hurt others and yourself. It ultimately leads to death in the end, physical at times and spiritual every time without the saving grace of Jesus Christ. Now ask yourself, if it was your child that got seriously injured, wouldn't you be hurt also? Any normal parent would be. Not only do we want to see our children safe, but we know the lasting effects that some injuries from poor decisions can have. Our Lord knows perfectly well that certain decisions will lead to broken families, anger, jealousy, bitterness, pride, deceit, hate, lifelong or fatal STD’s, estranged children, problems with self worth, suicides, substance abuses, or some even lead down dark roads into the occult world far away from God.

Can any of us follow the law perfectly? No one on earth can get it perfect. Even Christians struggle with sin, every human on earth does. And even God's children get corrected from time to time. Let's say you're child breaks a very important rule in the house. Would you punish them? Yes... Why? It's simple, to correct them because you care about them.

There are those that choose to outright ignore God and take life as it comes at them, learning EVERYTHING the hard way. I was one of them myself. I didn't learn how destructive my choices were until they nearly killed me. And if you are asking why God allows us to make these bad decisions in the first place, let me answer that question with another question. What good is it to have free will if God will not respect bad choices as much as good ones? If God didn't respect all choices, would it really be free will? Of course, God would rather you not choose to ignore him, but wishes we would realize the love behind His laws so we can avoid the worldly and spiritual ramifications of sin. The Lord is

“… longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.”

- 2 Peter 3:9 KJV

In summary, God is not in Heaven pointing the finger at us in disgust, waiting for a chance to punish us and send us to Hell. I believe He is in Heaven heartbroken, crying out, trying to get our attention. I imagine God screaming out to us daily, “NO! Don’t go that way! You are going the wrong way! That way leads to your death! Come back towards me!” Much like if your child was chasing a ball out into the street and you saw a huge truck coming down the road. You would be SCREAMING in horror for your child to move and run back towards you before they were killed in the street! Yet most of us ignore the signs of God screaming out to us. Perhaps we should submit and just realize God knows best and He would never steer us wrong.

"If a son shall ask bread of any of you that is a father, will he give him a stone? or if he ask a fish, will he for a fish give him a serpent?"

- Luke 11:11 KJV

"And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose."

- Romans 8:28 KJV
